Vicor Technologies Signs Agreement with Calvert Laboratories
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA — March 20, 2001 — VICOR TECHNOLOGIES, INC., is making significant progress in our plans to discover, develop and commercialize new drugs for hypertension, obesity and cancer.
Vicor's scientists completed the final collections and purifications of plasma proteins from hibernating animals for testing in our Paramus, NJ, laboratory these past two months. Dr. D. Scott Linthicum (VP, Director for Research and Development) has signed a testing contract with Calvert Laboratories (Scranton, PA) for the testing of these purified materials for reduction of hypertension in the spontaneous hypertensive rat model. Calvert Laboratories has expertise in animal testing for IND and NDA filings with the FDA. All the data collected under the contract with Vicor Technologies, Inc., will be done in a manner consistent with FDA requirements.
Vicor is also working on the protocol for appetite suppression studies to be conducted beginning within the next two weeks. Again, these studies will be conducted with Calvert Laboratories. Our testing with human tumor models will be done in nude mice and it is anticipated that these studies could begin as early as June 2001. Calvert Laboratories is well positioned to give Vicor expert assistance in FDA applications.
Vicor's patent attorney is now preparing disclosure documents for provisional patent applications for the hibernation specific proteins, peptides and hormones. Our attorney indicated that Vicor will file provisional patents on each of the peptide sequences that are identified by the 2D-gel/mass spec studies. Vicor will be able to build a very powerful patent portfolio that will be very attractive to pharmaceutical companies. Vicor will have one year to identify the function of each peptide and protein. Vicor scientists intend to use the human and mouse genome databases to assist in the assignment of function for the various sequences, by finding analogous genes and members.
Dr. Jerry M. Anchin (Associate Director for Research) has begun contract negotiations with Genomic Solutions (Ann Arbor, MI) for the 2-D gel and mass spec sequencing of the novel hibernation proteins and peptides. These are exciting times in biotechnology and medicine. The revolution in genomics and proteomics has generated a vast uncharted territory and offers a huge potential for new discoveries in medicine. We anticipate that Vicor Technologies will be well positioned to take advantage of these new opportunities
Vicor will be finalizing the dates for the Medical and Scientific Forum in the fall of 2001. We anticipate the meeting will be held in October. Dr. James E. Skinner (President) has spoken to the Dean at Florida Atlantic University regarding their participation. F.A.U. said that they would assist us in developing the agenda and that the C.M.E. Credits would be arranged through their biomedical programs office. Vicor is currently in discussion with several dynamic physicians and scientists that will speak at the forum. The Forum's theme will be the application of genomics and proteomics to medicine. Vicor looks forward to seeing you at this very important and exciting meeting.
The results of the first studies focused on Hypertension should be concluded within the next 40 days. Vicor looks forward to their results and will report them when available.
